The Digital & Technology (D&T) Architecture team is growing rapidly and looking for talented colleagues to help deliver ambitious and market leading services that live up to Sainsbury's industry leading reputation.

The Architecture team enable the creation of new capability for the organisation, whilst managing the risk it presents. You will be working within the Digital product family with an IT background with an area of technical expertise and/or experience developing digital and multi-channel technology solutions. You'll be working closely with the Senior Solution Architect from the creation of solution options and supporting the solution through the project lifecycle.

You'll be someone who loves to make things happen, who can communicate complex technical issues in a clear manner, who can work at the detailed level but also see the bigger picture, and be someone passionate about identifying and delivering simple solutions to complex problems.

As a member of the Architecture team at Sainsbury's, you will be a key part of shaping the future of the organisation and driving innovation in the retail sector.

To assist in the production of high quality, practical, flexible and detailed designs that are aligned to the Architecture principles, patterns and standards whilst progressing the overall business requirements
To assist in defining and delivering digital frameworks across web, mobile and stores
To be part of the delivery team in either a waterfall, agile or hybrid project delivery
Work closely with Service Operations and DevOps teams to support the smooth implementation of the solution as well as ensuring suitable support models

What I need to do

To be a technical leader in area of specialism
Identify key API requirements for integration between internal and external systems
Apply technical knowledge to produce or support the production of creative, yet practical, designs that users can understand and operate, and can be implemented and rolled out
Working with the product family, ensure alignment to architecture standards & patterns, as well as progressing the IT Roadmap
Working within a product family to ensure designs meet the business requirements
Determine the correct sizing for the new solution
Work with the Service Operations teams to ensure adequate support and creation of robust implementation approaches
Inputs into the high-level time and cost estimates for the delivery of the technical elements of a project so that informed decisions can be made about the best way to deliver the required change
Creates appropriate Key Design Decisions (KDDs)
Actively progress the broader enterprise principles and actively considers applications or services that should be decommissioned
Ensures alignment with Architecture through:
- Quickly resolving or escalating any technical design issues that may arise during the development lifecycle, ensuring there is alignment with Architecture guidelines, so that development progress is not delayed
- Working with development teams or integration partners to ensure that fit-for-purpose solutions are developed and implemented as per the detailed design and that potential technical issues, or debt are resolved or escalated early
- Creating, maintaining and improving reusable assets that generalise architectural and design approaches. Ensures that the patterns are 'fit for purpose' to be used by delivery projects
- Ensuring that the solution components of projects are aligned to Sainsbury's Technology Standards and Patterns and the Sainsbury's IT Roadmap through ongoing Design Authority engagement and appropriate document reviews
Supports and champions the adoption of the architecture principles and standards across the IT Division and the Business

Solutions delivered fit with the Digital and Technology IT Roadmap and adhere to the defined Architecture artefacts
Demonstrable participation with project governance processes that support the review and sign off of design documents
Demonstrable participation with Project Teams to Identify and mitigate risks and issues, escalating as appropriate
Working closely with Third Party product vendors. Raise product questions and take responsibility for managing issues found
Proactively seeking opportunities to improve our development and delivery approaches
Active participation in the architecture community, collaborating and building knowledge and expertise
Engagement levels with Projects at agreed capitalisation rate

What I need to know

An understanding of the Digital technology base, and a general understanding of other technology bases which, together, form the overall technical direction. E.g. microservices, APIs, SOA, event driven architecture, cloud
Keeps abreast with developments in the IT industry and retail market space to ensure that the architectures are kept in line with industry standard and only deviate for commercial benefit
Proven track record and experience within IT as either an architect or engineer
Recognised Professional Certification such as BCS or IEE certification and Architectural recognition form an external body such as TOGAF or the BCS is desirable
Experience of designing solutions
Proven ability to deliver flexible, reliable, supportable, cost effective (packaged and bespoke) IT solutions both in traditional Waterfall and Agile environments
Appreciation of IT Architecture (and underlying frameworks such as TOGAF) including the development (and ensuring adherence to) Architecture principles and standards
Demonstrable knowledge of the IT and retail marketplace & trends
Some experience in methods and techniques for structured reviews, including reviews of non-functional requirements, technical documents, test plans, business cases and other key deliverables

Demonstrable aptitude for logical thinking
Effective conceptualisation, pattern recognition and design skills
Presentation and facilitation skills
Ability to assess rapidly changing technologies and apply them to business needs
Ability to remain unbiased to specific technologies or vendors, providing an objective and fact-based viewpoint
Ability to quickly gain the confidence of the business and colleagues through good communication and influencing skills, simplifying complex technical messages
